Purpose
To create a safe, secure and welcoming enclosed dog park in Buckie, where dogs can exercise and play off lead.

Background
Many homes in Buckie and the surrounding area have little or no private garden space.  In a community with many dog owners, on-lead walks are often the main form of exercise available to local dogs.  While some dogs have reliable recall and can safely enjoy off-lead exercise at the beach, in woodland or other open spaces, this is not suitable for every dog.  Dogs without reliable recall, or those with a strong prey drive, may be unable to exercise off lead safely.  This can limit their opportunities for vigorous exercise and mental stimulation.

The Need
A centrally located, enclosed dog park would provide a safe place for dogs to exercise off lead and socialise in an appropriate environment.  The park could also help reduce social isolation.  For residents whose dog is their main companion, it would create an informal space to meet other local people and build community connections.

Proposed Dog Park

At the selected location the park would measure approximately 40 metres by 35 metres and would be enclosed by fencing between 2.5 and 3 metres high.  The park would be divided into two separate areas, enabling larger or more energetic dogs to exercise separately from smaller, quieter or less confident dogs.  A gated entrance enclosure, approximately 1.5 metres by 1.5 metres and 1 metre high, would be installed at the entrance. This would allow owners and dogs to enter and leave safely and preventing dogs escaping.  The enclosure would use green plastic-coated steel mesh fencing.  Climbing plants would be planted along the outside of the fence to soften its appearance and, over time, provide a habitat and food source for bees and butterflies during the flowering season.
